Apostolic Baptismal Pools

The first century mikva'ot (baptismal pools) and stairway discovered by Prof. Mazar's team at the southern wall of the Temple Mount. Scholars believe that it was in these purification pools (front of picture) that the new believers were baptized on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:41).

According to ancient sources, Levites stood on the stairway (back of picture) and ministered in song, while rabbis expounded on the Scriptures as pilgrims ascended the stairway to the Temple of God. In addition, the Psalms of the Ascent (Ps 120-134) - in Hebrew called the "Psalms of the Stairs" - were chanted by the Levites on this stairway.
