JERUSALEM, Israel - Does a first century Christian catacomb found near the ancient town of Bethany belong to the family of Lazarus, Jesus' disciple whom He raised from the dead?

The outside entrance of a first century catacomb, similar to the one used by Lazarus (John 12:41) and Jesus (John 20). Notice the "rolling stone" which was used to seal the tomb (Mark 28:2, Matt. 27:60, 66). Near Bethany, French researcher Charles Claremont-Ganneau found a similar catacomb with cross marks inside and the names "Lazarus", "Martha" and "Mary" inscribed on three separate ossuaries (stone coffins).

Substantial evidence seems to indicate so, and this information has compelled scholars to reinvestigate the findings in a burial cave, which was first discovered years ago by one of the great archaeologists of his time, French explorer Charles Claremont-Ganneau.

"Of particular interest are the inscriptions and dedications found inside the tomb," says Jerusalem-born historian, Prof. Ory Mazar. "Claremont-Ganneau, who was a very meticulous scholar, believed he had discovered a tomb which belonged to one of the very first families to embrace Jesus' new teachings."

An ivory pomegranate dates to the time of King Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem. It most likely adorned the hem of the High Priest's robe. The inscription on its side reads: "Holy [to] the Priests; [Belonging] to the Temple of Jehovah." Inside a first century Christian catacomb near Bethany, a similar priestly artifact was discovered by a coffin which was inscribed with the sign of the cross and the designation: "Simon, the Priest." These findings seem to substantiate the New Testament account that in the first century, "a large number of priests became obedient to the [Christian] Faith." (Acts 6:7, NIV)
