as the base for much of His ministry in the Galilee, Jesus made a wise
decision," says Dr. Vassilios Tzaferis, Deputy Director of the Israeli
Government Antiquities Authority.

Dr. Tzaferis, who headed the archaeological expedition at Capernaum, added:
"This is because Capernaum was centrally located on the border between the
kingdoms of Herod's two sons, Herod Antipas and Philip."

brought people through from many walks of life. The city even boasted a customs'
depot and a Roman military garrison.

The ancient, white synagogue of Capernaum is where Jesus performed
countless miracles and preached for much of His two-year ministry along the Sea
of Galilee. Indeed, the stones of the synagogue may have heard more of Jesus'
own words than are even recorded in the New Testament. (John 6:16,59 & John
21:26)

Excavations of Capernaum have unearthed the
ancient, central synagogue in which Jesus taught before "an astonished" crowd.
(Mark 1:21,22) Here He performed some of his most spectacular miracles,
including the resurrection of the daughter of the leader of the synagogue.

Jesus, its magnificent limestone walls, marble pillars, decorative beams and
Corinthian capitals may still be seen today," says Dr. Tzaferis. |
