Many scholars are now debating this very question since the identification of two Dead Sea fragments which appear to be first century copies of the New Testament.

A first century fragment of the Gospel of Mark (6:52-3) found in Qumran (cave seven) in the Judean Desert. Scholars believe this fragment confirms that Mark's Gospel was in use in the Holy Land during the lifetime of the first disciples and other eyewitnesses to events recorded in the New Testament.

"Miraculously preserved for 2,000 years, the Dead Sea Scrolls are believed to have been part of a library used by a sect of scribes who lived in a village called Qumran near the Dead Sea," says Israeli archaeologist, M. Leon.

Inked upon papyrus and parchment and placed in clay jars, these 2,000 year-old writings contained hand-written biblical commentaries as well as fragments of almost every book in the Old Testament including the complete book of the Prophet Isaiah.

"Intriguingly, certain similarities in the style of writing and theology found in the Dead Sea manuscripts opened the door to speculation that members of the Qumran sect may have had contact with disciples of Jesus Christ," says Leon.

However according to Prof. Mazar, "few scholars gave any real credence to such theories citing a lack of evidence for a 'Christian connection' to the Qumran sect... until now."
