아프로디시아스에서 1977년에 발굴된 2세기경 회당건립 후원자 명단이
새겨진 기념비
아프로디시아스는 에베소(터키 서해안)에서 동쪽으로
145킬로미터 정도, 서머나에서 남동쪽으로 217KM 정도 거리에 있었고,
인근 동쪽으로는 라오디게아와 히에라폴리스, 남동쪽으로는 골로새가
위치하고 있었다.
이 기념비에는 유대인이 69명인데 비해서 '하나님을
경외하는 자'가 무려 54명이나 되었고, 개종자도 3명이나 그들의 직업과
함께 새겨져 있었다. 또 이들 가운데는 기도와 율법연구와 구제활동에
특별히 헌신하는 '데카니'(A면)라는 그룹이 따로 있었는데, 이에 소속된
유대인이 69명 가운데 16명, 하나님 경외자가 54명 가운데 2명, 개종자
3명 모두가 포함되어 있었다. (A면은 '데카니' 그룹에 속한 자들의 명단이고,
B면은 '데카니'에 속하지 아니한 자들의 명단이다.) 하나님 경외자들
가운데 9명이 시의회 의원들이었고, 13명이 기능공들이었으며, 1명이
운동선수였다. 유대교 회당에서 바울의 설교를 듣고 기독교에 개종한
이들이 대부분 이들 하나님 경외자들이었다.
The 2nd century marble monument of Aphrodisian synagogue recorded
the names of the donors responsible for the erection of the building
discovered in 1977 at a valley about ninety miles east of Ephesus,
close to Laodicea and Colossae.
Side A listed those belonging
to the decany, denoting the ones who were in study groups known
for special reading of the law and discussion of its meaning as
well as offering prayers and engaging in charitable activities.
The proselytes-in all 3, the Jews-in all 16, and God-fearers-2.
Side B of the stone listed the names of the Jews and God-fearers
not in the decany. Jews-in all 53, God-fearers-in all 52.

number: Jews-in all 69, God-fearers-in all 54, and proselytes-3.
Nine of the God-fearers were city-councilors, thirteen were involved
in some trade as a craftsman. One was an athlete.
