19세기 초중반 미국인 월터 스캇트(Walter Scott)는 훌륭한 전도자였다. 그는 많은 사람들을 그리스도께로 인도하였다. 그는 사람들을 그리스도께로 인도하기 위해서 그 유명한 “다섯 손가락 실천”(five finger exercise)이란 전도방법을 사용하였다. 그는 다음과 같이 말하곤 하였다. “자, 여러분의 엄지손가락부터 시작합니다. 나를 따라 하세요. ‘믿음, 회개, 침례, 죄 사함, 성령의 선물.’” 나중에 우리는 그것을 “믿음, 회개, 신앙고백, 침례, 그리고 그리스도인의 삶”으로 고쳐서 사용하였다. 손가락을 사용한 별것 아닌 설명이 많은 사람들을 예수 그리스도의 구원하는 지식에 이르도록 하였다.
뉴저지 주에 있는 개척교회를 섬기면서, 특히 예배에 처음 출석하는 사람들을 접할 때, 필자는 우리가 누구인가, 우리는 무엇을 믿는가를 효과적으로 설명하기 위해서 필자 자신의 “다섯 손가락 실천”을 사용하고 있다. 그들의 가정을 처음 방문할 때, 그들이 스캇트의 “다섯 손가락 실천”을 받아드릴 준비가 되어있지 않을는지는 모르지만, 우리가 누구인지, 우리가 무엇을 믿는지를 꼭 알 필요가 있다. 사람들은 그리스도의 교회들이 무엇이 다른지, 무엇이 특별한지를 알 필요가 있다. 우리가 누구인가를 묻고 있는 이들에게 설명을 시도할 때, 우리가 강조해야할 점은 적어도 다섯 가지이다.
1. 우리는 비교파이다.
We are un-denominational.
우리는 중앙조직의 지배를 받는 지역교회들이 모인 단체가 아니다. 우리는 그리스도께서 교회의 머리가 되심을 믿으며, 각 교회는 그리스도와 그분의 말씀인 성경의 가르침아래서 자치(自治)를 행한다. 자치는 큰 호소력을 갖는다. 상당한 불안감이 교파교단들에 상존하고 있다. 그 이유는 중앙조직을 움직이는 임원들이 그들 구성원들의 믿음에 상반되는 결정들을 내리기 때문인데, 낙태나 동성애와 같은 사회적 이슈들에서 더욱 그렇다. 예수께서 요한복음 8장 32절에서 말씀하셨다. “진리를 알지니 진리가 너희를 자유케 하리라.” 우리는 비교파성을 유지함으로써 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 자유를 보존한다. 그것은 우리가 신성한 도로지도인 성경을 사용하여 우리 자신의 진로를 결정토록 돕는다. 그렇다. 우리는 비교파이다.
2. 성경은 우리의 교과서이다.

알렉산더 캠벨은 “성경은 홀로(alone) 말씀과 행동, 고백과 실천에서 오직(only) 성경뿐이다. 이것만이 세계를 바꿀 수 있고, 교회를 구할 수 있다.”고 언급하였다. 우리는 성경교회이다. 필자는 웰쉬머(P. H. Welshimer)가 쓴 시대를 초월한 전도지, “신약성경에 관한 사실들”의 내용에 동의한다. “비본질적인 것들에 관해서 우리는 가장 큰 자유를 허용하며, 본질적인 것들에 관해서 우리는 신약성경에 호소한다. 성경이 말하는 곳에서 우리는 말하고, 성경이 침묵하는 곳에서 우리는 침묵한다.”
오늘의 세계는 진정 하나님께서 무엇을 말씀하고 계신가를 알고 싶어 한다. 우리는 그분의 말씀의 근본위에 주님의 교회를 세울 수 있는가? 그렇다. 그 외침은 여전하다. “너는 말씀을 전파하라. 때를 얻든지 못 얻든지 항상 힘쓰라”(딤후 4:2). 사람들은 성경이 교육되고, 성경이 선포되며, 감동적이고, 성경적인 교회를 찾고 있다. 삶에 변화를 주는 것은 하나님의 말씀이다. “너희가 거듭난 것이 썩어질 씨로 된 것이 아니요, 썩지 아니할 씨로 된 것이니, 하나님의 살아 있고 항상 있는 말씀으로 되었느니라”(벧전 1:23). 그렇다. 성경은 우리의 교과서이다.
3. 우리는 오직 그리스도인일 뿐이다.
We are Christians only.
우리는 우리를 “그리스도에게 속한 자”로 확인시켜주는 “그리스도인”이란 이름을 사용한다. 우리는 ~교 교인 또는 ···교 교인들이 아니라, 오직 그리스도인일 뿐이다. 우리는 다른 어떤 것으로도 이름을 시작하지 않는다. 우리는 구교도도 신교도도 아니다. 사도행전 11장 26절은 “제자들이 안디옥에서 비로소 그리스도인이라 일컬음을 받게 되었더라.”고 가르친다.
이것이 하나님과 동행하기를 갈망하는 사람들에게 얼마나 아름다운 매력인가를 필설로는 충분히 강조할 수 없다. 단지 그리스도인만으로 존재하는 것이 가능하다는 것을 아는 것은 신선한 공기를 들이마시는 심호흡과 같다. 그렇다. 우리는 오직 그리스도인일 뿐이다.
4. 우리는 죄 사함과 성령으로의 선물을 위해서 침수로 세례를 베푼다.
We baptize by immersion for the forgiveness of sin and the gift of the Holy Spirit.
이 네 번째 “손가락 실천”에 이를 때까지, 그들은 보다 많은 것을 배울 채비를 갖추게 된다. 물론 우리는 침례를 주제로 한 많은 내용을 가르쳐야 한다는 것을 안다. 교파교회들은 침례의 주제에 관해서 그들 교인들의 생각들을 왜곡시켜놓았다. 필자는 단순히 마태복음 28장 18-20절, 마가복음 16장 15-16절, 사도행전 2장 38절에 기대를 건다. 예수는 침례를 명령하셨고, 사도행전의 교회는 그것을 선포하였으며 그 명령에 복종하였다. 우리는 침례에 관한 성경말씀의 기초위에 선 우리의 입장을 사과할 필요도 없고 타협할 필요도 없다. 그것은 침수에 의한 것이고, 죄 사함을 위한 것이다. 그것은 해도 좋고 안 해도 좋은 그런 것이 아니다. 성경은 침례를 죄 사함(행 2:38)에, 그리스도로 옷 입음(갈 3:27)에, 구원(막 16:16)에 관련을 짓는다. 필자는 또한 침례 때에 임하시는 성령을 통해서 하나님께서 그리스도인 내면에 거주하신다는 점을 강조한다. 무엇이 우리를 독특하게 만드는가? 우리는 죄 사함과 성령으로의 선물을 위해서 침수로 세례를 베푼다.

5. 우리는 매주일 주의 만찬을 거행한다.
We observe the Lord's Supper every Lord's Day.
매주 성만찬은 오늘날의 많은 교회들에게 얼마나 생소한 일인지 모른다. 매주 성만찬 준수는 신약성경에서 가르치고 있다. 사도행전 2장 42절은 “저희가 사도의 가르침을 받아 서로 교제하며 떡을 떼며 기도하기를 전혀 힘썼다.”고 적고 있다. 사도행전 20장 7절은 “안식 후 첫날에 우리가 떡을 떼려 하여 모였다. . . .”고 전한다. 이밖에도 서신서들에는 성만찬에 관한 가르침이 많다. 게다가 우리 주님께서는 “이것을 행하여 나를 기념하라.”고 부탁하셨다.
필자는 첫 방문 때에 이들 다섯 가지 주제들 가운데 그 어느 것도 너무 과하게 다루지 않는다. 그러나 한 시간 이내에 여러분은 그들에게 우리가 누구인지, 무엇을 믿는지에 대해서 우리의 입장을 간략하게 소개할 수 있다. 만일 여러분이 그 첫 방문에서 “냉기를 식힐” 그 어떤 방법을 찾고 계신다면, 필자의 이 “다섯 손가락 실천”을 이용해 보시기를 권한다.
MY FIVE FINGER EXERCISE

Walter Scott was a great evangelist and he led many to Christ. He was famous for his "five finger exercise" in helping people to become Christians. He would say, "Now beginning with your thumb repeat after me, 'Faith, repentance, baptism, remission of sins, gift of the Holy Spirit.’" Later on, we adapted it to "faith, repentance, confession of faith, baptism, and living the Christian life." That little demonstration has helped to lead many to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.
In new church work in New Jersey, I am using my own "five-finger exercise" to help explain who we are and what we believe, especially as I encounter new people who attend our worship service. On the initial visit in their home, they may not be ready for Scott's "five-finger exercise", but they do need to know who we are and what we believe. People need to know what it is that makes Churches of Christ and Christian churches different and unique. There are at least five things we need to emphasize as we begin to acquaint who we are to those who are inquiring.
1. WE ARE UN-DENOMINATIONAL - We are not a group of local congregations governed by a religious hierarchy. We believe that Christ is the Head of His church and each local congregation governs itself under Christ and His Word, the Bible. This has great appeal. There is much unrest in the denominational world because of decisions that are being made by "those in charge" which run contrary to the beliefs of their members, especially on social issues like abortion and homosexuality. Jesus said in John 8:32, "Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free." Being un-denominational preserves our freedom in Jesus Christ. It allows us to chart our own course, using the Divine road map, the Bible. Yes, we are un-denominational.
2. THE BIBLE IS OUR TEXT BOOK - Alexander Campbell said, "The Bible alone is the Bible only, in word and deed, in profession and practice; and this alone can reform the world and save the church." We are a Bible church. I agree with P.H. Welshimer who wrote in his timeless tract, "Facts Concerning the New Testament Church" that "On non essentials we admit the largest liberty; on the essentials we appeal to the New Testament. Where the Bible speaks, we speak; where the Bible is silent, we are silent."
Our world really wants to know what God is saying. Can we build the Lord's church on the meat of His Word? Yes! The cry is still, "Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season." People are looking for a church where the Bible is taught and preached, exciting, and relevant. It is the Word of God that changes lives! "For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God." 1 Peter 1:23. Yes, the Bible is our textbook.
3. WE ARE CHRISTIANS ONLY - We wear the name "Christian" which identifies us as "belonging to Christ." We are not ABC or XYZ Christians, but Christians only. We preface the name with no other. We are neither Catholic nor Protestant. Acts 11:26 teaches, "The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch."
I cannot emphasize strongly enough how wonderfully appealing this is to those who are seeking a walk with God. It is like a breath of fresh air to know that it is possible to be just a Christian. Yes, we are Christians only.
4. WE BAPTIZE BY IMMERSION FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SIN AND THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT -By the time I get to this 4th" "finger exercise", they are ready to hear more. We know, of course, that we need much teaching on the subject of baptism. The denominational world has wrecked the minds of its members on the subject of baptism. I simply take the prospect from Matthew 28:18-20, to Mark 16:15,16, to Acts 2:38. Jesus commanded baptism and the church in the Book of Acts preached and obeyed it. We need not apologize nor soften our stand on what the Bible says about baptism. It is by immersion and it is for the forgiveness of sin. It is not an option. The Bible relates baptism to the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38), the putting on of Christ (Galatians 3:27), and to salvation (Mark 16:16). I also emphasize God abiding in the Christian through the Holy Spirit Who comes at baptism. What makes us unique? We baptize by immersion for the forgiveness of sin and the gift of the Holy Spirit.
5. WE OBSERVE THE LORD'S SUPPER EVERY LORD'S DAY - How foreign this is to most churches today. The weekly observance of communion is taught in the New Testament. Acts 2:42 says, "They devoted themselves to the apostle's teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." Acts 20:7 tells us that "On the first day of the week we came together to break bread..." There is also much teaching in the epistles on the subject. Plus, our Lord said, "Do this in remembrance of Me."
I try not to get too weighty on any of these five things in this initial visit. But, in less than an hour you can give them a birds-eye view of who we are and what we believe. If you are looking for a way to "break the ice" in that first visit, I suggest that you might want to use my "five-finger exercise."
